Title: The Structure of the Sentence in the Prophetic Hadith through “Al-Jāmiʿ al-Ṣaghīr” by Al-Imam Al-Suyuti: A Grammatical Analytical Study
Abstract:
This study aims to identify the grammatical and structural characteristics of the sentence in the Prophetic Hadith, through an applied model drawn from Al-Jāmiʿ al-Ṣaghīr by Imam Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti — one of the most significant comprehensive collections of Hadith.
The research proceeds from the assumption that the Prophetic Hadith, with its authentic chain of transmission, represents a high model of Arabic eloquence, preserving within its concise expressions the secrets of linguistic precision and rhetorical beauty. The study is based on a combination of methodological approaches, foremost among them the analytical method, which follows the syntactic and structural composition of the Hadith sentences in description and analysis, supported by the historical approach in tracing scholarly opinions, and the statistical approach in classifying and limiting grammatical phenomena.
The dissertation is divided into five chapters. The introductory chapter discusses the authority of the Hadith as linguistic evidence, its linguistic status, and Imam Al-Suyuti’s method in compiling and arranging Al-Jāmiʿ al-Ṣaghīr.
The second chapter examines the concept of the sentence and its classifications in both classical and modern grammatical theory.
The third chapter studies the sentences that have syntactic positions (those with grammatical functions) and those without, within the context of the Prophetic Hadith.
The fourth and fifth chapters form the analytical core of the research: the fourth is devoted to the nominal sentence, exploring its structure and patterns (the subject and predicate), while the fifth focuses on the verbal sentence, investigating its internal composition and its functional elements such as transitivity, the agent, and verbs of near occurrence (e.g., kāda, awshaka).
The study concludes that the Prophetic Hadith presents an exemplary model of linguistic and structural richness. Its sentences reveal a unique harmony between grammar and meaning, reflecting the eloquence and precision of the Arabic language at its finest level.
