dc.description The purpose of this study is to investigate the spelling problems which encounter secondary school student in Sudan, identify the commonest types and causes of these spelling problems and provide solutions and recommendations. The population of the study is 40 teachers and 300 students. To collect the data, a questionnaire was administered to the teachers and 100 words standardized spelling test was administered to the students. Data collection were analyzed, Frequency of each group was calculated by (SPSS) Program. The types and causes of spelling mistakes were detected, analyzed and categorized. Results show that substitution constituted the highest percentage of the students' types of mistakes. The cause of the Irregularity of English spelling constituted the highest percentage. Based on the results the researcher recommended that: teachers should follow recent methods for teaching spelling, pay attention to students' spelling mistakes and encouraged students to correct their mistakes and to use dictionaries. Students should do more reading and writing to improve their spelling. en_US
